Musculoskeletal pain affects ligaments, muscles, nerves, tendons, and bones. Different factors can lead to musculoskeletal pain. Muscle tissue can be damaged with the wear and tear of daily activities. The pain could be caused in the back or throughout the body if patients were having a widespread condition such as fibromyalgia. Pain can range from mild to severe, and it can interfere with patient's daily tasks. Chronic pain is long-term pain that lasts for 36 months, while acute pain is the type lasting for shorter period. According to World Health Organization (WHO), among musculoskeletal disorders, low back pain causes the highest healthcare burden, with the global prevalence of 568 million people; moreover, ~1.71 billion people have musculoskeletal conditions. Other musculoskeletal conditions contributing to the healthcare burden include fractures, osteoarthritis, other injuries, neck pain, amputations, and rheumatoid arthritis, affecting 436 million, 343 million, 305 million, 222 million, 175 million, and 14 million people, respectively. Moreover, as per the WHO, the number of people suffering from low back pain would increase in the future, and in low-income and middle-income countries, it will grow even more rapidly. The conditions are likely to drive the market for low back pain treatments in the near future. In addition, various initiatives are being taken by various organizations to spread awareness regarding musculoskeletal pain among patients. For instance, in 2017, the WHO launched the Rehabilitation 2030 initiative to bring attention to the profound unmet need for rehabilitation and showcase the significance of strengthening health systems to implement the same. Such initiatives compel countries that are not equipped to existing rehabilitation needs, including people posed with musculoskeletal conditions.
