Global External Gear Pump Market Forecast to 2031: Key Insights
According to our latest study on "Global External Gear Pump Market – Global and Regional Share, Trend, and Growth Opportunity Analysis – by Type, Application, and Geography," the market was valued at US$ 8.3 billion in 2024 and is expected to reach US$ 11.3 billion by 2031. The External Gear Pump market size is estimated to register a CAGR of 4.8% during 2025–2031. Surge in materials innovation and fluid compatibility are driving the external gear pump market trends.
An External Gear Pump is a positive displacement type of pumping device that moves liquids by having two gears which mesh together and have an inlet and an outlet. Fluid (liquid) will be captured in spaces between the gear teeth and between the casing and the gears. Thus, the driven gear is pushed by you and you drive the pump with your hand so that you maintain a constant rate of flow through the system without the liquid flowing backwards. Because of this fact, external gear pumps are most commonly used to move hydraulic liquids, lubricating oils, and other viscous (sticky or oily) liquids, because they work reliably and can withstand very high pressures. An external gear pump uses mechanical energy to convert this energy into fluid movement. When the driver turns the driver gear, it also simultaneously causes the driven gear to rotate in the opposite direction; therefore, the liquid enters at the inlet side of the pump under low pressure, moves through the spaces between the gear teeth and exits back out at the outlet side of the pump under higher pressure, allowing for a smooth uninterrupted flow of liquid at a continuous rate.

One of the reasons external gear pumps are so popular is that they are simple but sturdy in construction, they have very tight internal clearances, and their positive, displacement nature keeps the flow continuous, pulse-free, and exactly metered characteristics that industrial processes are looking for. The demand for reliable fluid handling has increased in sectors such as chemical processing, petroleum, food and beverages, automotive manufacturing, hydraulics, and general machinery. There, external gear pumps are the means by which the plants deliver, meter, and blend corrosive or very viscous fluids with a constant flow rate, which is essential for the accurate dosing of chemicals or additives.
Bosch Rexroth refreshed its external gear pump range (AZPF) with high-performance, fixed-displacement, externally geared units of various sizes with a broad range of pressure/flow specifications in 2024. Their pumps remain targeted for diverse industrial hydraulics and process engineering applications. In the lubrication and hydraulic systems that are the backbone of automotive manufacturing, heavy machinery, and mobile equipment (e.g., hydraulic presses or lifting systems), external gear pumps provide the stable pressure and controlled flow that are the conditions necessary for the easy, uninterrupted, and trouble-free operation. CASAPPA unveiled an aluminum body gear pump series tailored for electric vehicle (EV) and hybrid machinery applications in April 2024. As the automotive industry moves toward electrification worldwide, such gear pumps will find use in thermal management, hydraulics, lubrication, or coolant circulation systems.
Global External Gear Pump Market: Segmental Overview
By pressure, the market is segmented into up to 100 Bar, 100 to 300 Bar, and above 300 Bar. The 100 to 300 Bar segment held the largest external gear pump market share, whereas the above 300 Bar segment accounted for the second largest external gear pump market share.
The 100 to 300 bar pressure range refers to medium-pressure applications that are most commonly found in industrial hydraulics, chemical processing, and high-performance fluid transport systems. Such a segment necessitates a more resistant kind of engineering to be able to endure the increased mechanical stresses. Hence, materials and components are chosen for their durability and corrosion resistance. Any pumps, valves, and piping systems operating within this range have to follow very strict safety standards as a result of the higher energy content, which, if not properly handled, can cause equipment failure leading to accidents. From an operational point of view, such a pressure range allows the use of more powerful and accurate machines that can be used in advanced manufacturing, injection molding, and pressurized chemical processes. At the same time, maintenance and monitoring become very important, and only trained personnel should be allowed to operate the system to ensure it is leak-free and there is no danger of rupture. The 100 to 300 bar segment is a compromise between performance and complexity and still offers higher efficiency and functionality without the extreme technical challenges and costs of ultra-high-pressure systems.
