The report includes prospects owing to the hydrogen generation market trends and their foreseeable impact during the forecast period.

Increasing demand for low-emissions hydrogen across industrial applications, supported by expanding production capacity and policy-driven investments, is emerging as a major driver for the hydrogen generation market. As industries seek to reduce carbon emissions and transition toward cleaner energy sources, low-emissions hydrogen is gaining importance in sectors such as refining, fertilizers, chemicals, steel, transportation, and power generation. The continued growth of hydrogen demand, combined with advancements in production technologies, is encouraging investments in both renewable-based hydrogen and fossil fuel-based hydrogen with carbon capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS).

According to industry estimates, global hydrogen demand increased by nearly 3% in 2025 to exceed 100 Mt, with consumption remaining concentrated in traditional applications such as refining and industrial feedstock. Although new applications are developing, low-emissions hydrogen adoption is gradually expanding, with demand increasing by approximately 20% in 2025 to reach nearly 1 Mt. Supportive policies, regulatory frameworks, and clean energy targets are expected to accelerate future adoption by addressing cost and infrastructure challenges.

The growth in low-emissions hydrogen production is illustrated in the accompanying bar graph, which highlights the increase in production capacity from 2021 to 2026. Production from fossil fuels integrated with CCUS is projected to rise from 0.58 Mtpa in 2021 to 0.82 Mtpa in 2026, while renewable-based hydrogen production is expected to increase significantly from 0.03 Mtpa to 0.36 Mtpa during the same period. This growth reflects increasing investments in both blue and green hydrogen technologies to meet rising clean energy demand.

Industrial sectors remain the primary growth drivers, with refining and chemical industries leading low-emissions hydrogen adoption. Based on projects that have reached final investment decisions (FID), approximately 2.5 Mt of low-emissions hydrogen production is expected to be consumed in refineries and industrial facilities by 2030. Additionally, emerging applications such as fuel cell electric vehicles, hydrogen-based shipping fuels, aviation fuels, and power generation are expected to create new demand opportunities.

The expansion of hydrogen offtake agreements, government support programs, and international initiatives is further strengthening market momentum. Although policy uncertainties remain in some regions, continued investment in production capacity and infrastructure is expected to support long-term growth of the hydrogen generation market.

Hydrogen Generation Market Report

The hydrogen generation market is witnessing significant growth opportunities across developing nations as governments prioritize clean energy adoption, industrial decarbonization, and energy security. Rapid industrialization, increasing energy demand, and growing concerns over fossil fuel dependence are encouraging emerging economies to invest in hydrogen production as a long-term sustainable energy solution. These countries are increasingly integrating hydrogen into their national energy strategies to reduce carbon emissions while supporting economic development and strengthening domestic energy resilience.

Many developing nations possess abundant renewable energy resources, including solar and wind, enabling cost-effective production of green hydrogen through electrolysis. This creates opportunities for expanding domestic hydrogen production while reducing reliance on imported fossil fuels. In addition, growing investments in renewable power infrastructure are expected to improve the commercial viability of green hydrogen projects and attract both public and private sector investments.

India is a prominent example of this trend. As part of its energy transition strategy, the country aims to reduce dependence on fossil fuels while increasing domestic clean energy production in line with its vision of becoming a developed nation by 2047 and achieving Net Zero emissions by 2070. To support this objective, the government launched the National Green Hydrogen Mission (NGHM) in 2023 to establish a comprehensive green hydrogen ecosystem and accelerate investments across the hydrogen value chain. The initiative is expected to strengthen domestic production capabilities, promote technology development, and encourage industrial adoption of green hydrogen.

Similar initiatives are being observed across other developing economies in Asia, the Middle East, Latin America, and Africa, where governments are introducing supportive policies, investment incentives, and public-private partnerships to accelerate hydrogen deployment. As infrastructure improves and production costs decline, developing nations are expected to emerge as major producers and consumers of hydrogen, creating substantial opportunities for equipment manufacturers, technology providers, engineering companies, and infrastructure developers throughout the global hydrogen generation market.

The hydrogen generation market analysis is performed by considering the following segments: type, delivery mode, technology and application. Based on type, the market is classified into green hydrogen, blue hydrogen, gray and black hydrogen, and others. The gray and black hydrogen segment held the largest hydrogen generation market share. By application, the market is divided into petroleum refinery, ammonia production, methanol production, transportation, power generation, and others. The petroleum refinery segment held the largest share in 2025.

Petroleum refining represents the largest application segment for hydrogen, where it is used primarily for hydrocracking heavy crude fractions and desulfurizing fuels to meet increasingly stringent fuel quality and emissions standards. Refiners have relied on hydrogen for decades, making this the most mature and established demand base within the hydrogen market. Global refiners, including Saudi Aramco, Shell, TotalEnergies, and Sinopec, operate large-scale captive hydrogen production facilities integrated directly into their refining complexes. This segment is now undergoing a gradual transition, as regulatory frameworks such as the EU's Renewable Energy Directive mandate refiners to replace a portion of conventional grey hydrogen with renewable alternatives, creating genuine contracted demand for green and blue hydrogen. Projects such as Galp's green hydrogen unit at its Sines refinery illustrate this shift. While refining is expected to remain the single largest hydrogen application by volume, its growth rate is comparatively modest, as it represents a mature, well-established market rather than new demand creation.

Ammonia production is the second-largest application for hydrogen, where it serves as the primary feedstock for synthesizing ammonia through the Haber-Bosch process, supporting both nitrogen fertilizer manufacturing and its emerging role as a hydrogen carrier for maritime shipping and export. This segment offers some of the strongest near-term commercial viability for clean hydrogen, as ammonia producers face direct regulatory and market pressure to decarbonize fertilizer supply chains. Major players, including Yara International, OCI Global, CF Industries, and Nutrien, are actively pursuing blue and green ammonia offtake agreements to meet sustainability commitments. Large-scale projects such as NEOM in Saudi Arabia are anchored specifically around green ammonia production for export markets. Ammonia's dual role as both a fertilizer input and a hydrogen storage medium makes this segment particularly strategic, as it addresses hydrogen's transport limitations while simultaneously serving established agricultural demand, positioning it as one of the most bankable application areas within the broader hydrogen market.

Transportation applications use hydrogen primarily through fuel cell electric vehicles, which convert hydrogen into electricity to power vehicles including passenger cars, buses, heavy-duty trucks, trains, and marine vessels. This segment is considered one of the fastest-growing applications within the hydrogen market, driven by its suitability for heavy-duty and long-distance transport where battery-electric alternatives face weight and range limitations. Automakers including Hyundai and Toyota, along with specialized manufacturers such as Hyzon Motors, are expanding fuel cell vehicle offerings, while companies like Alstom are advancing hydrogen-powered trains for regional rail networks

China Petroleum & Chemical Corp (Sinopec), Linde Plc, Air Liquide, ENGIE, Shell Plc, Plug Power Inc, Enapter AG, Ørsted AS, Siemens Energy AG, Bloom Energy Corporation, Iwatani Corporation, Messer SE & Co KGaA, Adani Group, and Reliance Industries Ltd are among the leading companies profiled in the hydrogen generation market report.
