The nuclear decommissioning service market in Europe was valued US$ 2.68 billion in 2019 and is projected to reach US$ 4.29 billion by 2027; it is expected to grow at a CAGR of 6.2% from 2020 to 2027.

Over the years, the nuclear decommissioning services market players have been operating manually with a massive workforce. This leads to a longer time period for decommissioning an entire nuclear power plant, and the workforce is exposed to the risk of radioactive materials existing at the site. Moreover, in the current scenario, the cost incurred in decommissioning a nuclear power plant is ~US$ 3.73 billion annually, which is estimated to surge over the years. Thus, several R&D activities are underway to develop robotic solutions for nuclear decommissioning. For instance, the R&D of the Robotics for Nuclear Environment (RNE)—a collaborative project supported by a number of nuclear supply chain players in the UK—is funded by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (UK), the Italian Institute of Technology, and industrial partners. The project is aimed at offering robotic solutions for the entire nuclear power plant cycle, including reactor operations, building new reactors, decommissioning, and waste storage. With the completion of the project, the demand for such technologies is anticipated to be huge, thereby facilitating the nuclear decommissioning market to mature over the forthcoming years. Attributing to all these factors, the Europe nuclear decommissioning services market players are increasingly focusing on robotic technologies, which is foreseen to pace up the decommissioning activity and also reduce the cost of the process.

Europe comprises the largest number of aging nuclear power plants that are reaching the end of their operational lifespan. This has led respective governments to decommission the operations of the facilities. Germany and France are among the key countries playing crucial roles in the enhancement of nuclear decommissioning services market.

France led the Europe nuclear decommissioning service market in 2019 and is expected to continue its dominance in the forecast period. The French electricity generation is majorly from nuclear power plants, comprising 75% of the total electricity generation, which is attributed to the long-standing policy based on energy security. France has been actively developing nuclear technology. Reactors and especially fuel products and services, have been a significant export. However, the French government has announced its plans to reduce the capacity to 50% by 2035. Recently, this year, the French government has shut down its oldest nuclear power facility, Fessenheim nuclear power plant. According to the operator of the facility, fuel removal activity is expected to be completed by 2023; and plant decommissioning is anticipated to be completed by 2040.
