According to our latest study on “Hemodialysis and Peritoneal Dialysis Market Forecast to 2028 – COVID-19 Impact and Global Analysis – by Type (Hemodialysis and Peritoneal Dialysis), Product (Devices, Consumables, and Services), and End User (Hospital-Based and Home-Based)," the market is expected to grow from US$ 89,851.61 million in 2022 to US$ 130,370.18 million by 2028; it is estimated to grow at a CAGR of 6.4% from 2022 to 2028.

The report highlights the key factors driving the market and prominent players with their developments. Major factors driving the hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis market growth are the rising prevalence of kidney diseases and increasing incidence of diabetes. Market strategies by key players for the development of products are likely to create opportunities for the market during the forecast period. However, risks and complications associated with dialysis hamper the hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis market growth.

After the onset of the COVID-19 crisis, India was one of the most severely affected countries globally. For instance, India witnessed a peak in the second wave of the pandemic, accounting for over ~4,00,000 cases per day and a cumulative number of 28 million cases. Therefore, kidney and dialysis care centers witnessed hospital bed shortages, oxygen shortages, travel restrictions, supply chain interruption, and other logistical issues. The International Society for Peritoneal Dialysis (ISPD) report states that 28% of patients missed hemodialysis sessions in India without informing the centers or units. The nephrologists advised some patients to reduce dialysis frequency because of the accommodating potential dialysis required for COVID-19 patients and mandatory restrictions imposed by the hospitals. For instance, complete drop-out of patients accounted for 4%, which was more in patients receiving dialysis in public sector hospitals. Dialysis requires frequent hospital visits, close interaction with several medical staff, frequent sampling and monitoring, prolonged-hospital stays in hemodialysis cases, and more frequent hospitalizations, which pose a high risk for the staff and patients and increases the exposure to COVID-19. Therefore, peritoneal dialysis (PD) offered unique advantages of being a home-based therapy, reducing the need for hospital visits and automatically ensuring social distancing. Further, with many countries, including India, witnessing travel restrictions and lockdowns, home-based therapies are safer and more convenient for dialysis patients. Moreover, with the incorporation of such remote monitoring technologies, quality PD can be offered to patients at an affordable cost with government/NGO support. PD appeared to be a convenient and safer therapy during the COVID-19 crisis that can assist healthcare systems globally in dealing with better patient care needing RRT in such demanding scenarios.

The hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis market, by type, is bifurcated into hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis. The hemodialysis segment held a larger share in 2022 and is expected to register a higher CAGR in the market from 2022 to 2028. According to the statistics revealed by the University of California San Francisco, nearly 750,000 patients in the US and an estimated 2 million patients globally suffer from kidney failure on an annual basis. Hemodialysis is a recommended procedure for patients suffering from kidney (or renal) failure and is performed among 90% of all dialysis patients worldwide. As per the University of California San Francisco report, 35% of hemodialysis patients remain alive for almost 5 years after treatment. Furthermore, a report by the Department of Health & Human Services USA states that the US Food and Drug Administration (US FDA) has approved devices for home hemodialysis and actively supports innovations in medical devices, intended for haemodialysis through its breakthrough programs and participation in "KidneyX," the Kidney Innovation Accelerator. The report further states that 87% of Americans suffering from kidney failure start their treatment with haemodialysis. The United States Renal Data System (US RDS) data revealed that about 63.1% of all prevalent End-Stage Renal Disease (ESRD) patients received hemodialysis therapy in 2016. These factors are significantly responsible for the segmental growth in the global haemodialysis and the peritoneal dialysis market, ultimately contributing to the overall market's development during the forecast period.
