According to The Insight Partners' research, the Middle East and Africa Portable Gas Detection Market was valued at US$ 133.9 Million in 2025 and is expected to reach US$ 218.8 Million by 2034, registering a CAGR of 5.8% from 2026 to 2034.

Stringent safety & regulatory frameworks and miniaturized and modular gas detection technologies are among the critical factors attributed to drive the Middle East & Africa portable gas detection market growth.

Equipment used in hazardous environments must comply with certifications such as ATEX for explosive atmospheres and IECEx for electrical equipment in hazardous locations, alongside EN, ISO, and OSHA-aligned standards, ensuring accurate detection, regular calibration, and reliable real-time monitoring. Industry-specific regulations, including EN 378, mandate gas detection and alarm systems in refrigeration and heat pump installations, particularly in hotels and commercial facilities, defining strict design, installation, operation, and maintenance requirements.

Standards and ATEX Certification:-ATEX certification is governed by Directive 99/92/EC (ATEX 137) and Directive 2014/34/EU (ATEX 95, recast of Directive 94/9/EC). These directives establish the requirements for preventing equipment-related explosions in potentially explosive atmospheres. Companies operating in hazardous environments are required to use ATEX-marked equipment that complies with the technical specifications applicable to each hazardous zone. ATEX standards are regulated through European directives and include specific equipment marking requirements to ensure safety and compliance.

Standards Operated by the IECEx System:-The IECEx System is based on internationally recognized standards, including IEC and ISO standards, which are specifically developed for equipment and installations used in hazardous areas where there is a risk of fire or explosion. Key standards under the IECEx system include IEC 60079-0, IEC 60079-1, IEC 60079-2, IEC 60079-5, along with other standards within the IEC 60079 series. These standards define the design, testing, certification, and safe operation of explosion-protected (Ex) equipment used in explosive atmospheres.

ISO 19891-1:2017:-ISO 19891-1:2017 specifies the performance requirements for portable gas detectors used to test the atmosphere of enclosed spaces onboard ships before personnel enter those spaces. The standard covers the gases to be measured, sensitivity requirements, indication and alarm functions, protection against shock, temperature variations, and water ingress, as well as the testing requirements necessary to ensure the reliability and safety of portable gas detection equipment.

OSHA Regulations on Gas-Leak Detection:-The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) regulates gas-leak detection and atmospheric monitoring through 29 CFR 1910.146, 29 CFR 1910.1000, 29 CFR 1910.1200, and 29 CFR 1910.120. These regulations recognize that industrial gases present significant health and safety hazards. To reduce these risks, OSHA requires employers to conduct air monitoring in confined spaces and areas where toxic or combustible gases may be present. Employers must ensure that worker exposure remains below OSHA\'s Permissible Exposure Limits (PELs) and prevent exposure to concentrations that reach Immediately Dangerous to Life or Health (IDLH) levels, thereby safeguarding workers from hazardous atmospheric conditions.

On the contrary, limitations of portable gas detectors hamper the growth of the Middle East & Africa portable gas detection market
