Integration of Advanced Technologies with Non-Lethal Weapons to Drive Non-Lethal Weapons Market Growth During 2021–2028

According to our latest market study on “Non-Lethal Weapons Market Forecast to 2028 – COVID-19 Impact and Global Analysis – by Technology, Product Type, and Application,” the market is expected to grow from US$ 6,153.95 million in 2021 to US$ 9,286.93 million by 2028; it is estimated to grow at a CAGR of 6.1% from 2021 to 2028.

Non-lethal weapons have become popular because of their advanced features and capacity to calm riots without causing casualties. Defense firms and key market players have improved their product portfolios with advanced technologies, such as laser interdiction systems, long-range acoustic devices, upgraded underwater loudhailers, flash-bang grenades, acoustic hailing devices, modular crowd control weapons, and tasers. These technology integrations in non-lethal weapons are propelling the growth of the non-lethal weapons market.

Companies, such as Pentagon, have started developing weapons that are less lethal with technologies including tasers. Taser-technology-integrated non-lethal weapons are electroshock weapons that overpower the peripheral nervous system. The most belligerent suspects are powerless to resist only if their electrode darts make good contact with suspects. Moreover, a US defense department program is putting five new techniques to the test for the development of non-lethal weapons, including the laser-induced plasma effect, carbon nanotube thermophone, pre-emplaced electric vehicle stopper, variable kinetic system, and maritime vessel stopping occlusion technology, to subdue enemies without killing them. Thus, these new technology integrations with non-lethal weapons are expected to contribute to the growth of the non-lethal weapons market.

Non-lethal weapons can have long-term and deadly consequences. For example, the non-lethal stun guns and other weapons used in the George Floyd protests in the US in 2020 was zipped in between protestors, which dispersed them as was intended. However, some people were hit by these non-lethal weapons, causing them to lose their vision or suffer other serious injuries. Thus, such deadly and serious injuries caused due to the use of non-lethal weapons are restricting the growth of the non-lethal weapons market over the years.

Various police forces and the defense sectors across North America have experienced a rise in the adoption of non-lethal weapons over the last decade. The US army acquired Pepperball VKS launchers in 2018, which are supercharged paintball guns. These weapons are intended to confuse, disorient, dazzle, and stun without causing long-term injury. Similarly, in February 2019, San Jose police officers adopted less-lethal weaponry in place of guns and other lethal weapons. Also, Canada experienced a rise in the acquisition of non-lethal weapons over the years. In October 2017, Lamperd Less Lethal, Inc. (LLLI) signed an exclusive agreement with the Canadian Tactical Officers Association for the purchase of less-lethal weapons and devices for law enforcement training in Canada, the US, and other NATO countries. Moreover, in February 2022, Canada sent non-lethal military aid to Ukraine to support it in the ongoing war against Russia. The factors are further expected to bolster the growth of the North American non-lethal weapons market during the forecast period.

Impact of COVID-19 Pandemic on Non-Lethal Weapons Market Growth

The lockdown measures, imposed due to the COVID-19 pandemic, substantially did not affected the demand for non-lethal weapons much as many riots and protests have happened during the COVID-19 pandemic. In several countries of Europe, non-lethal weapons were used to disperse the crowd during the pandemic. Thousands of people marched in Brussels, Belgium's capital, to protest COVID-19 restrictions. In protest, police forces responded with tear gas and water cannon after some protestors hurled fireworks at them. Demonstrators are mostly against the use of COVID-19 permits that prevent unvaccinated people from entering public places, such as restaurants and pubs.

Recently, in Netherlands, thousands of people protested against the government for COVID-19 measures. People in Hague used non-lethal weapons, such as grenades, pepper spray, and pepper balls, on police forces and moreover set ablaze the bicycles. A day later after violent protests in Rotterdam erupted and the police too retorted using non-lethal weapons. Thousands of people took to the streets in Austria, Croatia, and Italy as outrage over the new curbs grew. However, there were many protests during the lockdown in a few countries, such as Serbia, Slovakia, and Slovenia. The protest against the government has propelled the demand for several types of non-lethal weapons, which is driving the non-lethal weapons market growth.

Rheinmetall AG, Axon Enterprise Inc., Airsoft Guns, Combined Systems Inc., and Fiocchi Munizioni are among the key players operating in the non-lethal weapons market. Several important market players were analyzed during this study to get a holistic view of the market and its ecosystem.

The non-lethal weapons market is segmented based on the basis of technology, product, application, and geography. Based on technology, the non-lethal weapons market is segmented into chemical, acoustic, electromagnetic, and kinetic and mechanical. By product, the non-lethal weapons market share is bifurcated into direct contact weapons and directed energy weapon. By application, the non-lethal weapons market size is segmented into law enforcement agencies, military, and personalized applications. Based on geography, the non-lethal weapons market size is primarily segmented into North America, Europe, Asia Pacific (APAC), the Middle East & Africa (MEA), and South America
