Increase in Strategic Initiatives and Product Development by Global Players to Provide Growth Opportunities for Visible and UV Laser Diode Market Growth During 2021–2028

According to our latest market study on "Visible and UV Laser Diode Market Forecast to 2028 – Global Analysis – by Doping Material, Mode, Application, and Geography," the visible and UV laser diode market is expected to grow from US$ 3,127.50 million in 2021 to reach US$ 4,497.40 million by 2028; it is anticipated to grow at a CAGR of 5.3% from 2021 to 2028.

The rising uptake of visible and UV laser diodes worldwide for various applications, such as industrial, defense, medical, and automotive, is influencing the rise in investment in research & development and innovation in laser diode products. The key players operating in the global visible and UV laser diode market include ASML Holding NV; Osram Licht AG; Sheaumann Laser, Inc.; IPG Photonics; and Nuvoton Technology Corporation. Here is a snapshot of recent significant developments in this market:

  • Osram Licht AG developed laser diodes for automotive lighting in 2019. Similarly, in April 2022, the company introduced a green laser diode for various applications such as leveling, scanning, and dot projection. It is a 20 mW peak-output edge-emitting laser with a spectral bandwidth of 2 nm and a peak wavelength of 520 nm.
  • In January 2022, the UK Research Initiative (UKRI) announced that in collaboration with American universities Harvard and MIT and UK universities Strathclyde and Bath (VLC), the University of Sheffield will lead a new US$ 2.44 million project to advance the technology for the next generation of micro-displays and visible light communication in the near future. Sheffield researchers will investigate utilizing an entirely different way to monolithically integrate microscale laser diodes (LDs) and high-electron-mobility transistors (HEMTs) on a single chip, where each LD is electrically powered by individual HEMTs, as part of this worldwide research cooperation.
  • In December 2020, Ushio Inc. announced the addition of a new 04 nm laser diode to its violet light product portfolio. This product is intended to be used in direct imaging exposure systems, biomedical applications, and 3D printing.

Thus, the rise in investment in product development by private market players and the surge in investment in research & development activities by various institutions are expected to fuel the demand for advanced and efficient visible and UV laser diode products over the forecast period.

UV lasers have extraordinarily high photon energy, allowing them to address a wide range of applications that infrared lasers cannot. The third and fourth harmonics of Nd: YAG, which have wavelengths of 355 nm and 266 nm, respectively, are the most popular UV laser sources. While 355 nm and 266 nm are the most frequent UV laser wavelengths, several other Nd: YAG lines can be frequency-doubled and tripled to produce a wide range of UV wavelengths. The electric field density of the laser must be extraordinarily high to create these higher-order harmonics. As a result, the q-switching capability is the most common feature of these lasers. Continuous-wave (CW) UV laser diodes with single-mode and multi-mode beam profiles and free-space or fiber-coupled outputs are also available at 375 nm. Micromachining, laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (libs), fluorescence lifetime, and Raman spectroscopy are some of the common applications of UV laser diodes.

The visible and UV laser diode market size has been segmented and analyzed on the basis of doping material, mode, and application. Based on doping material, the visible and UV laser diode market is further segmented into AlGalnP, GaN, and InGaN. Based on mode, the visible and UV laser diode market is segmented into single mode and multi-mode. Based on application, the visible and UV laser diode market size is further segmented into industrial, defense, scientific and medical, and others.
