Development of turbine gear oils for compact gear boxes is projected to escalate the wind turbine gear oil market at a CAGR of 6.6%

Latest market study on “Global Wind Turbine Gear Oil Market to 2027 – Analysis and Forecasts by Product (Synthetic Gear Oil, Mineral Gear Oil, and Others), Application (Onshore and Offshore),”, The global wind turbine gear oil market is accounted to US$ 150.1 Mn in 2018 and is expected to grow at a CAGR of 6.6% during the forecast period 2019 – 2027, to account to US$ 264.6 Mn by 2027. The report include key understanding on the driving factors of this growth and also highlights the prominent players in the market and their developments.

Under the end-use industry segment, the synthetic gear oil segment accounted for the largest share in the global wind turbine gear oil market. The use of synthetic oil over mineral and other oils provides benefits through lower evaporation losses and tendency to form residues; improved lubricity, thermal and oxidation resistance, viscosity-temperature behavior, and low-temperature properties; reduced flammability; and resistance to ambient media. The most common types of synthetic gear oil are synthetic hydrocarbon oils (SHC), polyglycols (PAG), and ester oils (E). However, limited miscibility with mineral oils; incompatibility with paints, certain metals, and elastomers; and tendency to readily undergo hydrolysis in the presence of water limit the use of synthetic gear oil. Synthetic gear oils are more resistant to aging and high temperatures, and thus have a longer service life than mineral oils.

The companies involved in synthesizing wind turbine gear oils are developing high-quality gear oils with improved micro-pitting resistance and oxidative properties, better foam performance, and lower sludge-forming tendency. The turbine gear boxes available on the market are smaller in size and are made from lightweight materials. These gear boxes are more durable and subjected to high workload. Being smaller in size, they require less lubricating oil to support gears with much higher workloads. The high workload results in large heat generation and accelerates the oxidation process of gear oils. Oxidation is a serious problem associated with the use industrial gear oil as it leads to sludge formation. Hence, the oil is being formulated to be more thermally stable, and resistant to micro-pitting and fatigue. The trend of reducing cost associated with gearbox manufacturing, and using lightweight materials for the construction of turbine gear boxes has imposed even greater demands on gear oils. Other trends include development of energy-efficient oils and oils with long life to extend drain (and maintenance) intervals.

The market for global wind turbine gear oil is concentrated with some very well-established players. Some of the key players in the global wind turbine gear oil market include AMSOIL INC., BP p.l.c. (Castrol Limited), Chevron Corporation, Exxon Mobil Corporation, Freudenberg Group, FUCHS Group, HollyFrontier Corporation (Petro‐Canada Lubricants LLC), Royal Dutch Shell Plc., Schaeffer Manufacturing Co., TOTAL S.A., among others.
