This plant is cultivated for its fruit, the extract of which is nearly 300 times sweeter than that of sugar. It is used as a low-calorie sweetener and is traditional Chinese medicine. The arhat fruit contains 25 to 38% of different carbohydrates, mainly glucose and fructose. Its sweetness is further increased by adding mogrosides which is a group of triterpene saponins.
