A non-directional radio beacon (NDB) is a low/medium frequency and ground-based radio transmitter used as a navigation aid for aircraft. It transmits an Omni-directional signal, which is received by an automatic direction finder (ADF) on board the aircraft. A non-directional radio beacon signals follow the curvature of the Earth, so that they can be received at much greater distances at lower altitudes, a major advantage over VHF omnidirectional range (VOR). However, non-directional radio beacon signals are also more affected by atmospheric conditions, mountainous terrain, coastal refraction and electrical storms, particularly in the long term. The non-directional radio beacon navigation consists of two parts-the automatic direction finder (ADF) device on the aircraft that detects the signal and the transmitter. Basically there are two types of non-directional radio beacon present i.e. approach NDB and locator NDB.
