Implementation of Mercury and Air Toxic Standards Provide Lucrative Opportunities for Bag Filter Market

According to our latest market study on “Bag Filter Market Forecast to 2028 – COVID-19 Impact and Global Analysis – by Filter Type and End-Use Industry,” the market is expected to grow from US$ 5,218.33 million in 2022 to US$ 6,841.67 million by 2028; it is estimated to grow at a CAGR of 4.6 % from 2022 to 2028.

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) in the US developed Mercury and Air Toxic Standards (MATS) to minimize the production of mercury and other dangerous air pollutants by coal- and oil-fired power plants. ~1,400 coal-fired power units operate in compliance with these regulations, and coal- and oil-fired power all plants having capacities larger than 25 MW adhere to these standards. As per the new emission standards, numerical emission limitations for mercury, particulate matter (PM), and hydrogen chloride (HCl) are already in place for all existing and new coal-fired power production units. Moreover, numerical emission limitations for PM, HCl, and hydrogen fluoride (HF) are in place for all existing and new oil-fired units. These power plants can also demonstrate MATS compliance with regard to HCl and HF specifications by reducing moisture in the oil used. According to the EPA, the MATS Rule is likely to benefit millions of Americans, including children, elderlies, and other vulnerable groups, by significantly reducing the emissions of pollutants that cause cancer, respiratory illnesses, neurological damage, and other health risks.

The MATS Rule can be implemented using proven pollution control technologies. Since the US leads the world in terms of the design and production of these technologies, American businesses and workers are projected to supply most of the tools and labor required to satisfy the significant investments in pollution control that the standards are expected to spur. The MATS can substitute an annual performance test and tune-up for a hard-numerical dioxin/furan emission limit for both new and existing coal- and oil-fired power stations. To show compliance, the industrial plant operators must provide proof that the unit undergoes routine maintenance and inspections once every 36 months. The implementation of this new standard drives the US market for PM and mercury control equipment (bag filters). To comply with the MATS PM emissions limits, several coal-fired plants in the US have already upgraded their facilities or added fabric filters.

The bag filter market is segmented on the basis of filter type, end-use industry, and geography. Based on filter type, the market is segmented into shakers, reverse air, and pulse jet. The pulse jet segment is expected to dominate the bag filter market during the forecast period. The demand for improved operating efficiencies in industries such as cement production, electricity generation, chemicals, and municipal garbage is propelling the market for pulse jet bag filters. Based on end-use industry, the bag filter market is segmented into chemical processing, food & beverages, pharmaceuticals, paper & pulp, water treatment, and others. The food & beverages segment is expected to dominate the market during the forecast period. The bag filter is an easy-to-use and efficient method of filtering liquid food. In terms of geography, the bag filter market is divided into five regions—North America, Europe, Asia Pacific, the Middle East & Africa, and South America. North America dominated the overall market in 2021, and Europe contributed to the second-largest share of the market in 2021.

Impact of COVID-19 Pandemic on Bag Filter Market

The COVID-19 pandemic has affected every business globally since December 2019. The crisis has led to enormous disruption across the manufacturing and construction industries, among others, affecting every aspect of a business, including the manufacturing units, capital expenditures, R&D, demand, supply chain, production decisions, and mergers and acquisitions (M&A). Interruptions in raw material suppliers’ activities, temporary shuttering of manufacturing units, limitations on funding, and decreased demands from customers adversely affected the manufacturing and construction industries. Moreover, several businesses temporarily discontinued their manufacturing operations due to the imposition of social restrictions and the lack of manufacturing resources. The bag filter market also experienced the repercussions of the decelerated progress of the manufacturing and construction industries, demonstrating a global reduction in the supply and demand for filtration products.

Babcock & Wilcox Enterprises Inc.; BWF Offermann, Waldenfels & Co. KG; Camfil; Danaher Corporation; Donaldson Company, Inc.; Eaton Corporation plc; General Electric Company; MITSUBISHI HEAVY INDUSTRIES, LTD.; Parker Hannifin Corporation; and Thermax Ltd are the key players operating in the bag filter market. In addition, several other market players have been analyzed to understand the bag filter market.
