Rising Incidence of Hospital-Acquired Infections (HAI) due to Contaminated Endoscopes Drives Disposable Endoscope Market Growth

According to an article published in Frontiers in Endoscopy, the US reported ~20 million endoscopic procedures in July 2020, of which 600,000 are endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatographies (ERCPs). An increase in the presence of multi-drug resistant organisms (MDRO) on contaminated endoscopes can cause hospital-acquired infections (HAI). In recent years, endoscope-associated infections (EAIs), notably those linked to the reusable endoscopes used for ERCP (e.g., duodenoscope), have been a growing concern in the healthcare system. According to an article published in the National Library of Medicine, in December 2020, the attack rates of duodenoscope-associated outbreaks were between 6% and 20%. The same report concluded that the use of contaminated duodenoscopes during ERCP procedures can cause infections in as many as 10% of procedures. According to an article published in Cambridge University Press, in March 2022, between October 2019 and September 2020, 859 and 850 samples from reprocessed TJF-Q180V and TJF-160F/VF duodenoscopes, respectively, were collected. The overall contamination rate was 5.3%, with 91 samples from both models contaminated by high-concern organisms. According to the American Journal of Infection Control, up to 71% of reprocessed endoscopes can harbor microbial growth, leading to potentially severe complications that can ultimately compromise patient health.

According to an analysis of medical device reports by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) received between October 15, 2018 and March 31, 2019, 3 deaths, 45 infection cases, and 159 reports of contaminated devices were recorded due to the insufficient reprocessing of duodenoscopes used in pancreatic and bile duct procedures. Further, it states that Olympus, Fujifilm, and Pentax manufacturers have not complied with post-marketing studies for the reusable endoscopes.

Thus, there is a rising demand for disposable endoscopes across the world to avoid the cases of HAIs and risks associated with contaminated endoscopes.

Rapid Technology Advancement and Product Launches to Fuel Disposable Endoscope Market Growth in Future

The earliest generation of single-use endoscopes demonstrated their clinical value regarding cross contamination, availability, and workflow, but a performance gap compared to reusable endoscopes limited their adoption. However, in recent years, rising technological advancements in sensors, image processing software, and monitor processing power have improved image resolutions and clinical performance of single-use endoscopy products. Moreover, with single-use endoscopes, product iterations can occur at a faster pace than with reusable endoscopes. As a result, a few single-use endoscopes being launched recently have surpassed reusable endoscopes in terms of performance.

  • In July 2020, Ambu A/S launched aScope Duodeno 1.5 single-use duodenoscope for ERCP procedures. The aScope Duodeno 1.5 is designed with high-definition imagery and flexible bending angles to view the mucosa in detail and navigate the gastrointestinal tract efficiently. After the successful launch of aScope Duodeno 1.5, in February 2022, Ambu A/S announced that it has received FDA 510(k) clearance for its Ambu aScope Gastro and Ambu aBox 2, which are Ambu’s first sterile, single-use gastroscopes with updated imaging and design features. The single-use aScope Gastro solution, combined with the company's next-generation display and processing unit Ambu aBox 2, will help hospitals to perform quality and cost-effective gastroscopies at ease, across a wide range of care settings, such as endoscopy units, operating rooms (OR), intensive care units (ICU), emergency rooms (ER), and ambulatory surgery centers.
  • In April 2021, Olympus Corporation announced the expansion of its respiratory portfolio by launching the first line of single-use bronchoscopes, the H-SteriScopes. The disposable bronchoscope is available in five models with premium features that help clinicians to target, diagnose, and treat patients while enhancing workflow and productivity.
  • In May 2021, PENTAX Medical received CE mark for PENTAX Medical ONE Pulmo, a single-use bronchoscope with superior suction capacity and HD image quality. PENTAX Medical ONE Pulmo has features such as sterility with HD visualization, broadening the clinical applications beyond the standard disposable scope.

Thus, growing technological advancements and product launches of disposable endoscopes will propel the disposable endoscope market expansion during the forecast period.

Increase in Favourable Government Regulations Regarding Disposable Endoscopes to Offer Lucrative Opportunities for Disposable Endoscope Market During Forecast Period

Due to the difficulty in cleaning reusable devices for reuse and persistent contamination levels, the FDA recommends avoiding the use of duodenoscopes with fixed endcaps and replace them with disposable components, including disposable endcaps, or fully disposable duodenoscopes. The FDA urges manufacturers of disposable duodenoscope models to assist healthcare facilities with their transition plans. To reduce or eliminate infection risks for patients, FDA works with manufacturers to increase the supply of disposable caps of duodenoscopes and develop innovative designs of other devices. Currently, the FDA recommends a gradual transition to disposable duodenoscopes because it is not feasible to remove conventional, fixed endcap duodenoscopes completely. Furthermore, the FDA has ordered disposable endcaps from duodenoscope manufacturers to conduct post-market surveillance studies to gather information and verify that the new designs reduce contamination. After the completion of post-market surveillance studies by the FDA, duodenoscopes with disposable end caps are expected to be labeled with contamination rate information. The information would allow patients and healthcare professionals to make informed decisions about the potential risks associated with duodenoscope. Thus, favorable government regulation for disposable endoscopes will provide opportunities for the disposable endoscope market during the forecast period.

End User Insights

Based on end user, the disposable endoscope market is segmented into hospitals, diagnostic centers, and clinics. The hospital segment held the largest market share in 2022, and it is expected to be the largest shareholder in the market by 2028. The endoscopy procedure uses an endoscope to examine the interior of a hollow organ or cavity inside the body. Endoscopes are inserted directly into the cavity or hollow organ. Few endoscopic examinations are particularly done in hospital settings. Cystoscopies are typically performed in a hospital outpatient setting. Ureteroscopy is performed in an operating room, and most procedures are for doctors to manage or remove kidney stones. Many ENT endoscopies for examining a patient’s nose or throat to assess breathing problems or swallowing difficulties take place in hospital inpatient and outpatient settings. Several manufacturers of disposable endoscopes manufacture and sell devices to hospitals. Ambu A/S develops, manufactures, and sells disposable endoscopes to hospitals across the world through its own company or in collaboration with third parties. Thus, the abovementioned factors drive the disposable endoscope market growth for the hospital segment.
