The Europe antibiotics market is expected to reach US$ 15,569.87 million by 2027 from US$ 12,457.70 million in 2019. The market is estimated to grow with a CAGR of 3.1% from 2020 to 2027.
The growth of the market is driven by factors such as prevalence of infectious diseases and increasing development of generic drugs in the European region. However, tedious and expensive process of antibiotic development and the impact of COVID-19 pandemic are likely to restrain the Europe Antibiotics market growth to a certain extent.
Antibiotics refer to a class of medicines containing substances that are active against bacteria. These medicines either kill the bacteria or control the infection by inhibiting the bacterial reproduction, which in turn helps patient to recover. Antibiotics are specific to the type of bacteria being treated and are not able to be interchanged from one infection to another.
The prevalence of infectious disease, especially caused by bacteria is increasing day by day. According to a model developed by the different universities and organizations in Europe in 2015, there were 671,689 cases of infection due to antibiotic-resistant bacteria in the 30 countries within the European Union and the European Economic Area. These infections were estimated to cause 33,110 deaths and 874,541 disability-adjusted life-years. This means that there were 131 antibiotic-resistant infections per 100,000 people and 6.44 deaths per 100,000 people in these countries during 2015. Most of these infections occurred in infants less than 1 year of age, or in adults aged 65 years or older. The researchers also found that 63.5% of these antibiotic-resistant infections were associated with health care, showing that the majority of these infections occur in hospitals or other places that perform health care.
Italy and Greece had a substantially higher estimated burden of antibiotic-resistant bacteria compared to the other countries in the EU or EEA. According to a Eurosurveillance, infection with campylobacter is the most commonly reported foodborne illness in the European Union. It causes more than 200,000 cases annually, but due to under-reporting, the actual number of infections may be closer to nine million. Thus, the increasing prevalence of bacterial infections is expected to continue to drive the growth of antibiotics market during the forecast period.
Europe has been massively hit by COVID-19 outbreak affecting many of its countries on a large scale. Italy, Germany, Spain, the UK, and France along with other European countries are continually witnessing the rise in number of COVID-19 cases every day.
