The N95 masks market in SAM is expected to grow from US$ 198.35 million in 2021 to US$ 480.27 million by 2028; it is estimated to grow at a CAGR of 13.5% from 2021 to 2028.
COVID-19 is a contagious disease that is transmitted through the nasal and oral cavity. Since its emergence, SARS-CoV-2, the causative agent, has undergone mutation a couple of times, which has added to the severity of the COVID-19 pandemic. Right from the initial phases of this crisis, the World Health Organization (WHO), as well as health authorities from many countries, have been instructing healthcare professionals and the general public to use facial masks that lessen the chances of viral transmission from infected persons or carriers to healthy populations. Thus, the demand for masks has increased exponentially since 2020. The governments and regulatory bodies are insisting on the continuous use of masks in public places. As a result, the demand for the N95 masks has also increased. Thus, the huge prevalence of COVID-19 is a major factor boosting the N95 mask market
South American countries such as Brazil, Argentina and others have registered alarming number of COVID cases since 2020. This region is still characterized with their developing medical infrastructure and gaps in awareness and availability of services. The demand for masks, similar to other parts of the world, had spiked significantly in SAM since the beginning of the pandemic. According to an article in Thomson Reuters Foundation, 66% of people in Brazil said they always wear a mask when they leave their home, while less than 9% said they never wear one. In Chile, Colombia, Argentina, Thailand, Indonesia, Kenya and the Philippines more than 72% of people said they always wear a mask when they leave home. Various companies worldwide are contributing to redressing COVID19 crisis by their own means through CSR initiatives and collaborations with local and regional healthcare associations, hospitals and governments. For instance, in April 2020, a cargo plane chartered by Vale landed at Guarulhos International Airport in Sao Paulo around 11 pm on April 11, 2020. The first batch of 286,000 N95 masks is the first batch of 2.54 million masks purchased by the company and donated to the Brazilian government. Besides the N95 masks, there were 3.16 million disposable surgical masks in the shipment, along with 450,100 aprons, 216,000 gloves, and 2,250 protective goggles, making a sum of just over 4.1 million pieces of personal protective equipment (PPE). These PPE were donated to the Brazilian government, which were further distributed to health units throughout the country. However, Multiple raids carried out in Argentina have revealed a criminal network capitalizing on the emergence of new COVID-19 variants by producing and selling knock-off face masks lacking the appropriate anti-viral properties. On August 10, 2021, eight people were arrested in Buenos Aires for allegedly manufacturing fake face masks that mimicked those produced by leading commercial brands as well as those made by Argentina's National Scientific and Technical Research Council. Moreover, the Argentine Government issued the following measures involving the enforcement of the Supply Act (Law No. 20,680) to guarantee the regular supply of essential products to the market, which stated professional face masks must be available to the healthcare system. To guarantee that, the sale of N95 face masks is going to be banned to anyone who is not part of the healthcare system. This might have a negative impact to certain extend.
With the new features and technologies, vendors can attract new customers and expand their footprints in emerging markets. This factor is likely to drive the N95 masks market. The SAM N95 masks market is expected to grow at a good CAGR during the forecast period.
