The demand for body scanner is the largest in the region, due to terahertz being a new technology and North America being one of the earliest adopters. In the United States, the FAA Modernization and Reform Act required all full-body scanners operated by the Transportation Security Administration at airports to use "Automated Target Recognition" software, which replaces the image of a nude body with a cartoon-like image. As a result of this law, all back-scatter X-ray machines previously in use by the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) were removed from airports by May 2013, as the agency stated that the vendor i.e., Rapiscan did not meet their contractual deadline for the software implementation. In November 2018, the federal security officials at American airports announced about testing a new device that lets screeners simultaneously scan multiple passengers from up to 25 feet away. The TSA has given the go-ahead to the latest technology, called 'passive terahertz' screening. Officials hope the new screening method will speed up security checkpoints lines and better accommodate the growing number of travelers passing through the nation's airports, reports the Los Angeles Times.
